Jailbreak Your iPod Touch on a PC

This is a guide that will teach you how to jailbreak your 2nd Generation iPod Touch on a PC. Once you have jailbroken your iPod Touch you will have the applications called "installer" or on the new firmwares "Cydia" which lets you install other applications onto your iPod Touch. Before you can jailbreak your iPod you need to find out what firmware version your iPod Touch is running.

       NOTE: Do not use these instructions if you have a 1st generation iPod touch. To jailbreak the 1st generation iPod Touch follow this guide.

To find the firmware version of your iPod:

       1) Turn on your iPod and click on the application called settings.
       2) Go to the section called general. It should be the third from the top.
       3) Now go to the section called about. It should be the first on the list.
       4) Scroll down untill you find where it says firmware version.

Congratulations now that you have found out the firmware version expand the section of this guide that applys to you and your iPod.

Please note that Apple requires you to buy certain firmware updates, only follow guides for these firmwares after you have legally purchased the update from Apple.

Firmware 2.2.1

Although firmware 2.2.1 has been jailbroken and there is a tutorial for windows users, a Mac version of this guide will not be created due to the release of a new firmware version.

Firmware 3.0

1) Create a folder on your desktop called Jailbreak.

2) Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Jailbreak folder. Likewise, download the latest 3.0 firmware from here and place it in the same folder.

3) Extract the RedSn0w zip file to the Jailbreak folder you created.

4) Launch iTunes and connect your iPod Touch to the computer.

5) Select your iPod Touch from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button.

6) Navigate to the Jailbreak folder on your desktop and select the 3.0 firmware ipsw you downloaded earlier then click the Open button.

7) Once iTunes has finished updating your iPod Touch to the 3.0 firmware you may launch redsnw0w.app from the Jailbreak folder.

8) Click the browse button once RedSn0w opens.

9) Select the 3.0 firmware ipsw from the Jailbreak folder then click Open.

10) RedSn0w will verify the firmware, once completed click the Next button to continue.

11) Select Cydia and click the Next button.

12) Plug your iPod Touch into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button.

13) Follow the steps RedSn0w gives you to put your iPod Touch into DFU mode.

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

14) Wait while your iPod Touch reboots.

15) RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk.

16) RedSn0w will notify you once this is complete. Click the Finish button.

17) When your iPod Touch finishes rebooting in about 5 minutes it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
