Jailbreak Your iPod Touch on a Mac
This is a guide that will teach you how to jailbreak your 1st Generation iPod Touch on a Mac OSX computer. Once you have jailbroken your iPod Touch you will have the applications called installer(new versions are now called Cydia) that let you install other applications onto it. Although before you can jailbreak your iPod you need to find out what firmware version you have.
NOTE: Do not use these instructions if you have a 2nd generation iPod touch if you would like to jailbreak your 2nd generation iPod touch follow this guide.
To find the firmware version of your iPod:
1) Turn on your iPod and click on the application called settings.
2) Go to the section called general. It should be the third from the top.
3) Now go to the section called about. It should be the first on the list.
4) Scroll down untill you find where it says firmware version.
Congratulations now that you have found out the firmware version expand the section of this guide that applys to you and your iPod.
Please note that Apple requires you to buy certain firmware updates, only follow guides for these firmwares after you have legally purchased the update from Apple.
Firmware 1.1.1
1) Go to safari on your iPod and go to jailbreakme.com
2) Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the button that says install AppSnapp
3) Once it loads it will automatically start downloading and then installing the program
4) Once it finishes just slide to unlock it and click on the application called installer and wait while it checks its sources, this may take a few minutes.
5) Once its done go down to install and then scroll down to the section called tweaks(1.1.1) and click on OktoPrep and install it
6) It will say you are now ready to perform an update to 1.1.2 click ok and then exit out of that and return to the home screen
Firmware 1.1.2
Downgrading firmware version 1.1.2
1) You first need to get a copy of the iPod Touch firmware version 1.1.1 it can be downloaded from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UXK3VPXB.
2) Once firmware 1.1.1 has been downloaded place it on your desktop. It should be called iPod1,1_1.1.1_2A110a_Restore.ipsw
3) Plug in your iPod Touch then open iTunes and wait for it to recognize it.
4) Go to the iPod source page under the summary tab and hold down the option key (alt key) if this doesnt work hold the shift key down, then press the button saying check for update. A window should pop-up
5) Find the firmware 1.1.1 that you earlier downloaded to your desktop and click open.
6) iTunes will then start to extract and install the 1.1.1 firmware on your iPod. NOTE: your music and videos will not be deleted from your iPod.
Congratulations you have Completed Part 1.
Upgrading from firmware version 1.1.1
1) You now need to go into iTunes (plug in your iPod if you haven’t already)
2) Go to the iPod source Page in iTunes and update your iPod to firmware version 1.1.2
3) If iTunes says you have the current version of firmware already then go to http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V5J259NV and download the 1.1.2 firmware to your desktop
4) Then from iTunes in the iPod source page press the shift key and then click on the button saying check for updates
5) A window will pop-up find the 1.1.2 firmware that you downloaded to your desktop and let it install
6) Once done updating your iPod will restart and you will see that the installer application is gone so it needs to be re-jailbroken
7) Press control + alt + delete and close any processes that have the word iPod, iTunes, or Apple in them (make sure you show all processes from users)
8) Go to http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8J005HTO and download the file. As this is downloading go to your desktop and create a folder called jailbreak 1.1.2
9) Once the file is done downloading extract the files the jailbreak 1.1.2 folder you just created
10) Open up the jailbreak 1.1.2 folder and double the file called OSX
11) A window should pop up select install ssh and the password is alpine. If will then install this may take a few minutes. (If iTunes starts up immediately close it)
12) When it finished installing a pop-up saying it has successfully completed and should ask you to re-boot your device. Once it has been re-booted click ok
13) Your iPod should then automatically re-boot
14) You should now have the installer application and SSH on your iPod
Congratulations you can now install your applications on your iPod touch
Firmware 1.12 - 1.1.4 (Recommended Fast Install)
Note: If you have a previously jailbroken iPod to make sure that the process works properly you should restore your iPod.
1) Plug in your iPod Touch and make sure that it is recognized by iTunes
2) Go here and download the latest version of Ziphone for OSX.
2a) You can also download version 3.0 from here.
3) Once you have downloaded the file run the .exe which will ask you to extract the files to the default folder or another folder of your choice.
4) The file called ZiPhoneGUI.exe should open automatically, if it doesn't then open the folder that it was extracted and run the file ZiPhoneGUI.exe. (It is recomended that you run the file as an administrator to make sure that it works properly.)
5) Click the button that says Jailbreak and just let the program work.
When it has finished working your iPod will be jailbroken and you will see the application called installer. This will let you access and install the thousands of third-party applications available for your iPod Touch.
Firmware 2.0 - 2.0.2
Make sure you have iTunes 7.7 or higher, if you do not install it before continuing.
1) Make a folder called "Jailbreak" on the desktop. Download Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 from here and place the file in folder. Also download the 2.0.1 firmware from here and place it in Jailbreak folder.
2)Launch PwnageTool 2.0.2. Click Ok if a popup appears.
3) Click to select Expert Mode from the top menu bar.
4) Click to select your iPod touch. A check-mark will appear over the image of the touch.
5) Click the blue arrow button to continue. You will be brought to the "Browse for IPSW" page. If PwnageTool doesn't automatically find the ipsw file you can click Browse for IPSW. Click to select the found IPSW file, a checkmark will appear next to it. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.
6) You will then be brought to a menu with 7 choices. Click to select General then click the blue arrow button.
The General settings allows you to decide the partition size. Click to Disable partition wipe-out then click the blue arrow button.
The Bootneuter settings are greyed out for the iPod touch. Click the blue arrow button.
The Cydia settings menu allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install them them later.
Click to select the Download packages tab. Then click the refresh button to display all the available packages. Double clicking the package you want will download it and make it available in the Select Packages tab.
Checkmark the ones you want then Click the blue arrow button.
The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. For know leave these settings as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.
The Custom Logos Settings menu allows you to add your own images as boot logos. Click the Browse button to select your Boot logo and Recovery logo.
Remember the rules for them: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension bellow 320x480...
Click the blue arrow button to continue.
7) Click the Build button to select it then click the Blue arrow button to begin.
8) You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to the Jailbreak folder you created. Allow up to 10 minutes for the IPSW to be built. You will be asked to enter your administrator password. Do this then click the OK button. When prompted if your iPod touch has been Pwned before, click Yes/No. You will be asked to turn off the device. Make sure it is connected to the USB port.
9)You will be prompted to put your iPod into DFU mode, read the instructions carefully before proceeding. Hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds. Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds to enter DFU. If you fail, it will show you a message. Click Yes. Unplug the iPhone from the USB. Turn it off, then turn it back on. Plug it back into the USB and turn off the iPhone when prompted. When done correctly, Pwnage 2.0 will display a message telling your that it successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will also open telling you that there is an iPod connected in recovery mode.
10)In iTunes, hold the Option button and click Restore.
11) Navigate to the Jailbreak folder on your desktop. Select the custom IPSW that was created (iPod1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Custom_Restore.ipsw) and click the Open button.
12) iTunes will now restore and load the new firmware on your iPod touch. This can also take up to 10 minutes.
13) Once the restore is completed your iPod touch will reboot and you will notice Cydia is present on the SpringBoard!
Firmware 2.1
Note: Make sure your iPod already has firmware verion 2.1. You can download it from here if you do not have it. To load it, plug in your iPod and from withing iTunes hold the Option button and click Restore then choose the firmware file you just downloaded.
1)Download QuickPwn 1.1 from here. Open the .dmg file and drag it to your Applications folder (or Desktop). Do not run the file from inside the .dmg.
2)Run QuickPwn, and click OK to agree to the warning message.
3)Connect your iPod Touch when prompted.
4)Decide if you’d like to change the boot and restore logos.
5)QuickPwn will search your drive for the correct file, and then build a new IPSW for you. This can take up to 10 minutes. If the program does not find the IPSW you can browse for the location of where you downloaded the 2.1 firmware.
6)During the process you’ll be prompted to enter your password.
7)Next you’ll be prompted to power off your iPod Touch. Hold down the Power button, and then “swipe” the slide to power off arrow at the top of your iPod Touch screen
8)Now you’ll be prompted put your iPod into DFU mode. To do this hold down the Power button and the Home button at the same time. Then you’ll be prompted to let go of one button and continue to hold the other. Follow the instructions carefully.
9) If you didn’t manage to hold and hold/release the buttons at the right time(s), you’ll be presented with a “Failed to enter DFU mode”. From here, just click Yes to try again.
10)Once you get it correctly, QuickPwn will jailbreak your iPod Touch.
11) Now that the files have been uploaded to your iPod Touch, it will reboot itself. Give it time to power back on.
11)You’ll be presented with a “success” screen, possibly before your iPod Touch has finished booting. Allow it to completely start up before you exit QuickPwn.
12) Once your iPod has completely started up, you’ll notice 2 new icons on your Springboard - Cydia and Installer. Use those apps to install apps on your newly jailbroken iPod Touch.
Firmware 2.2
1) Download Pwnage Tool from here.
2) Download the 2.2 IPSW File from here.
3) Extract and run the QuickPwn GUI application that you downloaded in Step 1
4) Run Pwnage Tool and follow the on-screen directions.
4a) If you have any troubles with an indivdual step refer to the Firmware 2.1 section of this guide.
5) Once your device reboots, it will be jailbroken and ready.
Note: Wait until your iPod has completly restarted before you close the program and disconnect it.
Firmware 3.0
1) Create a folder on your desktop called Jailbreak.
2) Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Jailbreak folder. Likewise, download the latest 3.0 firmware from here and place it in the same folder.
3) Extract the RedSn0w zip file to the Jailbreak folder.
4) Launch iTunes and connect your iPod Touch to the computer.
5) Select your iPod Touch from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button.
6) Navigate to the Jailbreak folder on your desktop and select the 3.0 firmware ipsw and click the Open button to continue.
7) Once iTunes has finished updating your iPod Touch to the 3.0 firmware you may launch redsnw0w.app from the Jailbreak folder on your desktop.
8) Click the brows button once RedSn0w opens.
9) Select the 3.0 firmware ipsw from the Jailbreak folder then click Open.
10) Once the 3.0 firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.
11) Select Cydia and click the Next button.
12) Plug your iPod Touch into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button.
13) You will then be prompted by RedSn0w to put the iPod Touch into DFU mode.
Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
14) Wait while your iPod Touch reboots.
15) RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk.
16) RedSn0w will notify you once it has been completed. Click the Finish button.
17) When your iPod Touch finishes rebooting in about 5 minutes it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
