Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G (Mac)

This guide outlines how to jailbreak an iPhone 2G (1st Generation) on a Mac. Jailbreaking your iPhone will allow you to install free 3rd party applications on it. Thousands of free iPhone games are at your disposal, as well as a variety of other useful applications and the abililty to more completely customize your iPhone, and the entire procedure is free and virtually risk-free.

       NOTE: Do NOT use these instructions if you have a 2nd generation iPhone (iPhone 3G). We also provide a guide detailing how to jailbreak/unlock your iPhone 3G.

First, find the version of firmware that your iPhone is running:

       1) Turn on your iPhone and go to settings.
       2) Select "general".
       3) Select "about".
       4) Scroll down until you see .

Congratulations now that you have found out the firmware version expand the section of this guide that applys to you and your iPod.

Please note that Apple requires you to buy certain firmware updates, only follow guides for these firmwares after you have legally purchased the update from Apple.






Firmware 3.0

These are instructions on how to unlock and jailbreak your iPhone 2G on the 3.0 iPhone firmware using RedSn0w for Mac. Before beginning make sure you have updated to iTunes 8.2.

1) Create a folder called Pwnage on your desktop.

Download the following files and place them in the Pwnage folder you just created:
RedSn0w
BL 3.9
BL 4.6
Firmware 3.0.0 (2G)


2) Extract the RedSn0w application from the RedSn0w zip file to the Pwnage folder.


3) Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

4) Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

5) Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the firmware ipsw. Click the Open button to continue.

6) Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware you may launch redsnw0w from the Pwnage folder on your desktop.

7) Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button


8) Select the firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open

9) Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

10) Make sure Cydia and Unlock is selected and click the Next button.

11) We will know need to set the location of our bootloader files.

12) Click Browse and select the 3.9 bootloader file from the Pwnage folder on your desktop.

13) Click Browse and select the 4.6 bootloader file from the Pwnage folder on your desktop.

14) Click the Next button to continue.

15) Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

15) RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode.

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

16) Your iPhone will now reboot

17) RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk.

18) Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button.

19) When your iPhone finishes reboot (5 minutes or so). It will run BootNeuter then be unlocked and jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

Firmware 3.0.1 & 3.0.2

Please refer to the firmware instructions, they both use the same method. This includes using the 3.0 firmware for this jailbreak.

Firmware 3.1

These are instructions on how to unlock and jailbreak your iPhone 2G on the 3.1 iPhone firmware using Pwnage Tool for Mac.

Alright, first make a folder called Jailbreak on the desktop. In it, you will need a couple of things. The two bootloader files:
- BL 3.9
- BL 4.6
Pwnage 3.1, found here.

You will also need the 3.1 iPhone firmware.
3.1.0 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw

1) Create a folder on your desktop with all the required files listed above.

2) Double click to mount the PwnageTool.dmg.

3) Drag the PwnageTool icon to the Jailbreak folder then launch it.

4) Click Ok if presented with a warning.

5) Make sure you click Expert Mode from the top menu.

6) Select your iPhone or iPod from the three devices shown. Notice a large checkmark appears over the selected device. Then click the blue arrow button at the bottom right.

7) You will be brought to the "Browse for IPSW" page. If PwnageTool doesn't automatically find the ipsw file you can click Browse for IPSW... button.

8) Click to select the found IPSW file, a checkmark will appear next to it. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.

9) You will then be brought to a menu with 7 choices. Click to select General then click the blue arrow button.

10) The General settings allows you to decide the partition size. Check Activate the phone and Enabled baseband update. Click the blue arrow button.

NOTE: If the Enable Baseband checkbox is not greyed out, checkmark it. This will allow the unlock to occur.
NOTE: For the 3.0 firmware you may have to increase the size of your root partition slightly for the IPSW build to be successful. 590MB worked just fine for me

11) In the Bootneuter settings, click Neuter bootloader, Unlock baseband, and Auto-Delete BootNeuter.app. It is not necessary to upgrade the bootloader unless you are really feeling the need to be on 4.6. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

12) The Cydia settings menu allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install the necessary them later.

13) Click to select the Download packages tab. Then click the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double clicking the package you want will download it and make it available in the Select Packages tab.

14) Checkmark the ones you want then Click the blue arrow button.

15) The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. For know leave these settings as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

16) The Custom Logos Settings menu allows you to add your own images as boot logos. Click the Browse button to select your Boot logo and Recovery logo.

NOTE: Remember the rules for them: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension bellow 320x480.

17) Click the blue arrow button to continue.

18) You are now ready to build your custom firmware. Click the build button to select it, then click the blue arrow button.

19) If this is the first time doing this, you will be asked to upload the 3.9 and 4.6 BL files. When prompted to search the web, click no.

20) You will prompted to browse for the 3.9BL file. Click Yes then select the file(BL-39.bin) from the Jailbreak folder you created on your desktop and click the Open button.

21) Repeat step 20 for 4.6.

NOTE: After loading the 4.6 BL you may be asked if you're a legit user. If you legally have ATT or an iPhone plan in a different country, clicking yes will not unlock the iPhone and activate it as your legal plan already activates it and there is no need for an unlock. However if you wish to keep the iPhone unlocked, when asked if you're a legit iPhone user, click no.

22) After both are found. You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to your Jailbreak folder on the desktop.

23) Your custom IPSW is now being built. Please allow up to 10 minutes.

24) If prompted enter your Administrator password and click the OK button.

25) When prompted if your iPhone has been Pwned before, we clicked No. It allows for a more thorough restore.

26) You will be asked to turn off the device. Make sure it is connected to the USB port.

27) It will ask you to hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds. Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds to enter DFU.

NOTE: If you fail, it will show you a message. Click Yes. Unplug the iPhone from the USB. Turn it off, then turn it back on. Plug it back into the USB and turn off the iPhone when prompted.


28) When done correctly, Pwnage 3.1 will display a message telling your that it successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will also pop-up.

29) In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click Restore.

30) Navigate to the Jailbreak folder on your desktop using the dialog window that appears. Select the custom IPSW that was created (iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw) and click the Open button.

31) Once the restore has completed, it will restart your iPhone. The phone will then launch BootNeuter.app to unlock your device. Please allow 5 minutes for this to complete. Your iPhone will restart once completed.

Firmware 3.1.2

1) Make a folder on the desktop called Jailbreak.

2)Download the following files and place them in the Jailbreak folder:
BL 3.9
BL 4.6
arrowPwnageTool 3.1.4
3.1.2 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

3) Double click to mount the PwnageTool 3.1.4.dmg file. Drag the PwnageTool icon to the Jailbreak folder then launch it. Click Ok if presented with a warning.

4) When PwnageTool opens select Expert Mode from the top menu.

5) Select your iPhone from the three devices shown (select the iPhone on the left). Notice a large checkmark appears over the selected device. Then click the blue arrow button at the bottom right.

6) You will be brought to the "Browse for IPSW" page. If PwnageTool doesn't automatically find the ipsw file you can click the 'Browse for IPSW' button. Click to select the found IPSW file, a checkmark will appear next to it. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.

7) You will then be brought to a menu with 7 choices. Click to select General then click the blue arrow button. The General settings allows you to decide the partition size. Check 'Activate the phone' and 'Enabled baseband update'. Click the blue arrow button.

NOTE: If the Enable Baseband checkbox is not greyed out, checkmark it. This will allow the unlock to occur.
For the firmware you may have to increase the size of your root partition slightly for the IPSW build to be successful. 590MB seems to work for most people

In the Bootneuter settings, click Neuter bootloader, Unlock baseband, and Auto-Delete BootNeuter.app. It is not necessary to upgrade the bootloader unless you are really feeling the need to be on 4.6. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

The Cydia settings menu allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install the necessary them later. Click to select the 'Download packages' tab. Then click the 'Refresh' button to display all the available packages. Double clicking the package you want will download it and make it available in the 'Select Packages' tab. Checkmark the ones you want then Click the blue arrow button.

The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. For now leave these settings as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

The Custom Logos Settings menu allows you to add your own images as boot logos. Click the Browse button to select your Boot logo and Recovery logo. Remember the rules for them: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension bellow 320x480. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

8) The custom firmware is now ready to be built. Click the build button to select it, then click the blue arrow button.

9) If this is the first time doing this, you will be asked to upload the 3.9 and 4.6 BL files. When prompted to search the web, click no. You will prompted to browse for the 3.9BL file. Click 'Yes' then select the file (BL-39.bin) from the Jailbreak folder you created on your desktop and click the Open button. Select the file in the Jailbreak folder on your desktop and click the Open button.

Do the same for 4.6.

Note: After loading the 4.6 BL you may be asked if you're a legal user. If you legally have ATT or an iPhone plan in a different country, clicking yes will NOT unlock the iPhone and activate it as your legal plan already activates it and there is no need for an unlock. However if you wish to keep the iPhone unlocked, when asked if you're a legal iPhone user, click no.

10) After both are found. You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to your Pwnage folder on the desktop.

11) Your custom IPSW is now being built. Please allow up to 10 minutes. If prompted enter your Administrator password and click the OK button. When prompted if your iPhone has been Pwned before, we clicked No. It allows for a more thorough restore. You will be asked to turn off the device. Make sure it is connected to the USB port.

12) Please follow these directions carefully. It will ask you to hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds. Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds to enter DFU mode. If you fail, it will show you a message. Click Yes. Unplug the iPhone from the USB. Turn it off, then turn it back on. Plug it back into the USB and turn off the iPhone when prompted. When done correctly, Pwnage 3.1.4 will display a message telling your that it successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will also pop-up.

13) In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click Restore.

14) Navigate to the Jailbreak folder on your desktop using the dialog window that appears. Select the custom IPSW that was created (iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw_Custom_Restore.ipsw) and click the Open button.

15) Once the restore has completed, it will restart your iPhone. The phone will then launch BootNeuter.app to unlock your device. Please allow 5 minutes for this to complete. Your iPhone will restart once completed.
